Bad News for Roosevelt Park

A resident near Roosevelt Park reports that there is evidently gang activity in the neighborhood. "ESG" graffiti tags are from the gang, FYI, and there's been a major uptick in crime in the past 2 weeks with:

2 armed robberies
5 burglaries
2 assaults
1 shooting
1 homicide

all near the park.

Police are gathering info and working with the community.

Let me remind you of Hawker's advice: call the police (311 if its a non-emergency) EVERY SINGLE TIME you see drug or gang activity in your neighborhood. DO NOT assume that that this kind of crime is something we just have to live with in Hampden.

What exactly does "gang activity" look like?

By far, the largest part of this problem is that police make repeated solid arrests and the perps continue to get released back into Hampden with a slap on the wrist. A temporary hassle and likely a merit badge among their peers. As we all know, catching people in the act of committing a crime is easy. Report crime to the cops? Absolutely. They're out there working hard for us based on what their superiors tell them is a priority. But to see results on the front AND back end, write en masse to:

shooting???? WHAT!?!?!

FYI - From your post 1 year ago re: the crime in Hampden in Late June - Late July:

6 stolen auto
2 home burglary
10 larceny (from various places)
3 aggravated assault (knife and "other")
and 2 "Robb Highway"

So the question is - is this our typical summer upswing in "kids out of school" crime activity?

I hadn't heard about the shooting either. I don't have deets.

Re: the summer upswing in crime, I do think that's most certainly part (if not most) of what's going on, but I don't think we should become complacent and just expect and live with it.

ESG, wonder what that stands for.

Electric Slide Gang?
Enthusiastic Swinging Gang?
Environmental Study Group?
Execptional Studying Girls?
Experimental Sushi Gang?

oh, I agree. Complacency is not the answer...but I am afraid I have too much on my plate to be able to cognitively deal with all of this at the moment in a constructive fight-back sort of way. What do you think are some solutions, hawker?

Man, if I had the answers, I'd be doing something a lot more important than keeping this blog.

The shooting was random, but involved two people that had a previous history with one another so I wouldn't be too worried about that. I notice a lot of kids (mostly teenage) out at night in large numbers walking up and down the streets. Where the heck are their parents???? ESG- my brother's initials- ha! I disagree on the part of catching someone in the act- usually it is after the fact and by the time the cops decide to show up the perp is long gone. I have reported several incidents and cops arriving 20-30 minutes later is not acceptable in my mind. But whatever. Carry pepper spray and use it.

Make that 6 burglaries. Yesterday, a friend on 37th near Hickory had her house broken into while she was at work. They entered by breaking a basement window and smashing a solid wood door in half at the top of a narrow stair well to gain entry to the rest of the house. And they had the nerve to help themselves to the liquor. Speculation is that it may be the work of a well known, and frequently arrested, heroin addict in Hampden that was recently released from prison. He/she/they walked out with a duffle bag full of miscellaneous items. Its also rumored that very local pawn shops are enablers of such activity and have been cited in the past for accepting stolen property for resale.

BTW, when you see a police car in Hampden, consider a friendly wave as thanks... just for being around.

Bosconet - watch West Side Story to get an idea of what "gang activity" may look liked.

Usually lots of unprovoked singing and dancing.

"ESG" supposedly stand for East Side Gang. They should change it to "Terrible Sense of Direction Gang" if they're tagging in Hampden (being located in Northern Baltimore).

Also, from what I understand from community officials, this uptick in crime is not of the usual "kids being out of school" variety.

Yikes. Time to stop jogging through Roosevelt park as it starts to get dark...
